Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Registration
  • How do I register? All registration is done online through Sports Connect.  Get started by going to the top right corner of this screen and clicking "Register Now".  Please create an online account and add your players.  Any programs that your player is eligible for will automatically appear as available for registration.  Be sure to checkout your shopping cart to complete your transaction and secure your registration.  You should receive an email confirmation once you have completed registration.  If you have any questions, please contact the registrar at [email protected] for assistance. ↑ Back to top
  • Which program should my child join? Fall Core: For the majority of players, open to new and returning players, no tryouts required
Extra: For more advanced players, requires selection from attending tryouts
EPIC: For special needs players with physical and/or intellectual disabilities
  • Unless you attended a tryout or have a player with special needs, you should be registering for the Fall Core program. ↑ Back to top
  • How old does my child need to be? Children must be at least 3 years old by July 31st prior to the fall season.  Our region can accommodate players up to 16 years of age. ↑ Back to top
  • What age group is my child? Starting membership year 2026-2027 (MY2026-2027), AYSO will be transitioning from birth year age groups to school year age groups.  For more information, you can visit here: AYSO Age Determination. ↑ Back to top
  • Can my child play in a different division? Per AYSO guidelines, players are not allowed to play in a younger age division.  On occasion, players may be permitted to "play up" in an older division, though this is dependent upon circumstances and is subject to region and area approval. To inquire about playing up, please contact the regional coordinator at [email protected]. ↑ Back to top
  • Can my child play with a friend or request a coach? Players in the U6 Division may request to play with one friend (though this is not guaranteed).  In order to ensure teams are balanced and fair, we cannot allow players to request specific coaches, coaches to request specific players, or players to request friends.  However, a head coach and assistant coach may volunteer to work together to ensure their children are placed on the same team.  One exception is that siblings/twins playing in the same age division will automatically be placed together on the same team.   ↑ Back to top
  • We have been added to the waitlist.  What does that mean? Most of the time if a player is added to the waitlist, it is become we do not have a sufficient number of coaches in a given age group to accommodate all of the players who are interested.  If a coach becomes available, we will move players off the waitlist in the order that they were added.  If we are unable to place your player on a team, we will attempt to get you in contact with a neighboring region who may have available space.  Once a spot becomes open and you are moved off the waitlist, you have a defined period of time to respond and pay the registration fees.  If you are on the waitlist and would like to guarantee that your child can play, please volunteer to coach! ↑ Back to top
  • What is the refund policy? Blue Sombrero/Sports Connect service fee ($3.50) and AYSO National Membership Fee ($25) are non-refundable.
Full refunds may be issued until July 1st (except nonrefundable items, e.g., Blue Sombrero service fee and national fee)
$50 refunds may be issued through July 14th
There will be no refunds issued beginning July 15th since teams have already been formed

  • What is the AYSO National Membership Fee? The AYSO National Membership fee is charged by the national organization automatically and covers each player for the duration of the membership year which runs from August 1 through July 30 of the following year.  The AYSO National Membership Fee is used to help pay for the cost of running  the nationwide program including insurance, development, and delivery of training programs and membership in the United States Soccer Federation. ↑ Back to top
  • We've signed up! Now what? You should expect to hear from your coach sometime in mid to late July with practices starting sometime in August.  Please make sure you check your email regularly, as email is our primary form of communication. ↑ Back to top
Season, Games & Equipment
  • When is the soccer season? Our primary fall season runs from August through mid-November. ↑ Back to top
  • When are practices and games? Practices times are on weekdays at the discretion of the coach.  The majority of games take place on Saturdays.  Please note that we cannot make accommodations or offer refunds due to scheduling conflicts.  The only way to select your specific practice day is if you volunteer to coach. ↑ Back to top
  • Where do practices and games take place? Field locations vary by age group, though all practices take place within Long Beach.  The majority of Fall Core games take place in our region, with older age groups sometimes traveling to neighboring regions to compete.  Please see our Fields page for more information. ↑ Back to top
  • What equipment is required? All players are required to play with shin guards.  Full-coverage shoes are required to participate, and it is advisable to use cleats designed specifically for soccer.  A uniform (shirt and shorts), socks, and ball will provided with registration.  We recommend bringing a water bottle to all practices and games.  For more information about permitted and not permitted equipment, please see our page here. ↑ Back to top
  • Can I bring my pet to my child's practice/game? We know your pet is a valued member of your family, but because others may have allergies or may be scared of animals, Region 177 does not allow pets at practices, game day venues, tournaments, or other Region 177 team events. This Policy is endorsed at the National level, is endorsed at the Section level, is endorsed at the Area level, and is consistent with neighboring Regions. AYSO is obligated to observe and respect existing regulations and laws regarding the presence of service animals at our fields. Service animals are defined by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) as only dogs or miniature horses that have been trained to do work or perform tasks for the benefit of an individual with a disability. Other animals, whether wild or domestic, do not qualify as service animals. ↑ Back to top
Programs
  • What programs are available outside of the standard fall season? Especially skilled players from the Fall Core season may be selected for All Stars, which competes in additional games and tournaments through February. From March to May, our region runs a Spring Academy in partnership with First Touch Soccer that focuses on individual skill development and includes both skill-based sessions and Saturday scrimmages. ↑ Back to top
  • How can my child join Extra? Extra tryouts are determined by the Extra coordinator and coach and will typically be announced via email from the region or on our Instagram page.  Tryouts are commonly held early in the calendar year prior to the upcoming fall season.  If you would like more information about the program, you can view the Extra page here: Extra.  If you have any further questions, you can reach out to the Extra coordinator directly at [email protected]. ↑ Back to top
