we need you to volunteer

Why does AYSO cost less than other soccer programs?

We don't pay. Seriously. Board members are not paid. Referees are not paid. Coaches are not paid. Everyone you see lining fields, setting up goals, and working tirelessly to provide a world-class soccer experience for your child is a volunteer.

We are powered by parents/guardians. Not money. When your player participates in AYSO, so do you! Players play. Parents and guardians support the region by volunteering. Every family is expected to volunteer in one way or another, which is how our region is able to keep our fees so low.  Without volunteers there is no region and there are no games. Even parents with little or no soccer experience can learn to be a great coach or referee for the kids. All it takes is enthusiasm, commitment, and a foundation in AYSO philosophies.

Beyond coaching and refereeing, there are many other ways to help. We also need volunteers to help serve on our volunteer board, work at information booths, serve as field marshalls, set up the fields, the list goes on. Every volunteer helps.

Region 177 respects the whistle

Is it okay to challenge or harass the referee?  NEVER.

Challenging or harassing the referee is not permitted at AYSO games—this applies to coaches, spectators, and players at all times. Referees are volunteers who are working hard to create a fun and fair experience for the kids, and they do not need input from the sidelines. Officiating involves constant judgment calls, and those decisions belong solely to the referee.

It’s natural to want the best possible experience for your child or team. However, shouting at or threatening the referee during a game is neither appropriate nor helpful. It can be upsetting for players, distracting for others, and discouraging for the volunteer referee and it does not improve the situation.

If you have concerns, the Referee Administrator is available to discuss them after the game in a private setting. Your feedback will be heard and taken seriously.

Recently, AYSO has implemented the Referee Abuse Prevention Policy from U.S. Soccer.  This policy establishes a zero-tolerance stance on referee abuse, strengthening sanctions for both physical and non-physical abuse to ensure safer environments

Kids Zone Pledge

AYSO Kids Zone
At AYSO, we want all players, coaches, families, and volunteers to have fun. That’s where AYSO Kids Zone comes in.

Kids Zone is a special program that encourages fans on the sidelines, and anyone nearby, to use positive language, show good sportsmanship in their attitude and behavior, and create a great experience for every player.

All participants in Region 177—parents, children, and volunteers—sign the Kids Zone pledge when they register to take part in an AYSO program. Kids Zone is a reminder that the AYSO soccer fields are safe, friendly, and happy places for children to play.

Parents and spectators agree to the following guidelines:

  • Kids are No. 1
  • Fun – not winning – is everything
  • Fans only cheer, and only coaches coach
  • No yelling in anger
  • Respect the volunteer referees
  • No swearing or abusive behavior
  • No alcohol, tobacco or drugs
  • No weapons
  • Leave no trash behind
  • Celebrate the player – win or lose

Pets On the Field

We know your pet is a valued member of your family, but because others may have allergies or may be scared of animals, Region 177 does not allow pets at practices, game day venues, tournaments, or other Region 177 team events. This Policy is endorsed at the National level, is endorsed at the Section level, is endorsed at the Area level, and is consistent with neighboring Regions. AYSO is obligated to observe and respect existing regulations and laws regarding the presence of service animals at our fields. Service animals are defined by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) as only dogs or miniature horses that have been trained to do work or perform tasks for the benefit of an individual with a disability. Other animals, whether wild or domestic, do not qualify as service animals.
